Soil water permeameters

09.02

The permeameter is a laboratory tool to measure the saturated permeability, or K-factor, of soil samples. It's available in several variations: with an open or closed system, suitable for 5, 10 or 25 samples, and for use with soil sample rings with an external diameter of 2.1 or 2.4 in (53 or 60 mm).

  • Determines permeability directly on samples
  • Take samples in the field, analyze in the lab
  • Types for large and small scale analyses
  • Modernized electric measuring bridge
  • Low in maintenance
  • Closed system re-uses water over and over

Description

Permeability, or K-factor, refers to the capacity of the soil to drain off water. It is determined on one hand by the geometry of the complex of pores, depending on the texture and structure of the soil, and on the other hand on the intrinsic features of the soil solution (viscosity and density).

Applications

The soil water permeameter can be used to measure the saturated permeability of undisturbed soil samples in sample rings. The permeability factor gives accurate information about:

  • The presence of disturbing soil layers that prevent outflow of precipitation
  • The correlation between permeability and other soil properties such as porosity, granular composition, etc.
  • The vertical and horizontal permeability

This data can help draw further conclusions about

  • Irrigation and drainage systems
  • Well pumping
  • Subsidence phenomena
  • Predictions concerning the spread of polluting fluids resulting from calamities
  • Soil improvement- and maintenance advice

Open vs. closed system

The permeameter is available as an open system, or a closed system with a water pump. The advantages of a closed permeameter compared to an open system are:

  • Location independence, as no drainage is needed
  • Constant water temperature, equal to the temperature in the laboratory, which guarantees constant viscosity
  • Always the same water quality
  • Saves water
